Roses with thorns are always associated with obstacles and pain. Having cultivated roses for over 5000 years, Roses are considered as one of the most symbolic flowers of all time. The beauty of this flower is expressed in terms of portraying promise, hope, and new beginnings. The thorns are commonly recognized as obstacles and the bushes are recognized as barriers. To 'stop and smell the roses' means to take time to appreciate and reflect on the meaningful and positive aspects of life. The phrase 'there is no rose without thorns' means that in order to achieve greatness, enjoy something that is beautiful and pleasurable as roses, you must be willing to endure something that is difficult and painful such as bushes full of thorns. Anne Briante once stated “he that dares not grasp the thorn - Should never crave the rose” in her poem titled “The Narrow Way”. As we are very much aware of the phrase “No gain without pain”, here it implies that something as valuable as the rose will likewise have thorns on the stem. That is, to acquire something extraordinary, it is inevitable that we run over numerous challenges.
